Standing proudly on Alfred Street, Hallett Hall (originally the Hallett Institute) has been at the heart of community life since 1929. Its foundation stone was laid by Lily Margaret Melrose on November 28, 1928, and the hall officially opened the following year, replacing the original Institute built in 1879.
The building has served many roles over the decades. Downstairs once housed a hall, committee room, supper room and library, while the upstairs billiard room became the Hallett District Council Office. The Council later moved downstairs, before eventually merging into the Regional Council of Goyder in 1997.
In 1960, a new supper room was added thanks to a donation from Mrs Lily Owen Smythe in memory of her father, Sir John Melrose. This addition came with the condition that it also serve as a club room for the Hallett Red Cross and Country Women’s Association (CWA) branches. Further renovations during the 1980s and 1990s modernised the space, and since 1988, it has been officially known as Hallett Hall.
Today, the Hall continues as a vibrant hub for the community and is home to the Hallett Historical Society, who maintain the Hall’s History Room (open by appointment). The Society has also produced a Hallett Historical Walk brochure, available at the Hall and the local store, to help visitors uncover the stories woven into the town’s streets.
