Just 68km north of Burra, Terowie is a historic township with plenty of stories to tell. Founded in 1872 by John Aver Mitchell, Terowie grew around the railway, once a key junction until its closure in 1970. Many original buildings still stand, including the Terowie Hotel, railway platform, cafeteria, and Porters Building.

Terowie also holds a place in world history. On 20 March 1942, U.S. General Douglas MacArthur made his famous vow, “I shall return”, during a layover at the station. A commemorative plaque now marks the spot.

Today, Terowie remains a welcoming stop, with a local general store and information centre ready to greet visitors.
