The Heysen Trail Through the Goyder Region
Stretching from the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula to Parachilna Gorge in the Flinders Ranges, the iconic Heysen Trailcrosses some of South Australia’s most diverse landscapes, from coastal cliffs and native bushland to rugged gorges, pine forests, vineyards, farmland and historic townships. It is an impressive 1,200km long trail.
Within the Goyder Region, the trail reveals a quieter, gentler beauty. This section is known for its rolling hills, open farmland, red-gums, and sweeping pastoral views that capture the character of the Mid North. Passing through communities such as Burra, Mount Bryan, Hallett, and Spalding, it offers walkers a rich blend of natural and cultural heritage shaped by pioneering history, mining, and early agriculture.
The Burra to Spalding section is particularly popular with beginners, families, and day walkers, thanks to its well-graded paths, softer terrain, and easily accessible entry points. It’s an ideal place to experience the Heysen Trail without committing to long or technical stages.
Whether you’re a seasoned backpacker tackling the full trail or a casual walker exploring shorter day hikes, the Goyder Region offers some of the most approachable, scenic, and rewarding sections of the Heysen Trail
