Colin Thiele Drive

Trace the Footsteps of Colin Thiele

One of Eudunda’s most celebrated person, Colin Thiele (1920-2006), turned the rhythms and landscapes of his childhood into beloved novels like Sun on the Stubble and The Valley Between.

Stop at the beautifully maintained Eudunda Centenary Gardens to view the life-sized sculpture of Thiele seated at his notebook, accompanied by a pelican, recognising his connection to Storm Boy.

From there, embark on the self guided “Colin Thiele Drive”, approximately 25 kilometres in length, tracing the countryside that inspired much of his work. The journey begins at the Eudunda Family Heritage Gallery on Bruce Street and features interpretive signage marked ‘Gustav & his Dog’, referencing characters and local heritage from Thiele’s tales.

Whether you’re a literature lover, a history buff or simply keen to see South Australia’s rural heart from a fresh angle, this trail invites you to slow down, explore the land that shaped a writer, and uncover the heritage woven through the wheels of the car or the stroll of your boots.
